About Dominicana Republic
Cottage industry in the Dominican Republic
Cottage industry in the Dominican Republic is widespread as a kind of craft, but the scale of production is not high. This is mainly family
production, and artisans are «hereditary», learning from their ancestral skill.
However, in recent years, handicraft products have gained increasing
distribution, thanks to the development of tourism in the country.Souvenirs are manufactured by handicraftsmen, can be purchased in specialized markets and shops, which are many across the country, and on the beaches, or just on the
roadside main roads.
Generally the handicrafts are made of ceramic, leather or semi-precious stones. On the southern coast of the island are well represented
various interpretations of Taino gods, a local Indian tribe, as well as bags,
belts and shoes from high quality leather.
In 1981, with a light hand of the local sculptor Liliana
Mayor, became very famous doll «Limei» ceramic figure
without a face, painted in Creole colors and became an amulet of the
country.
There are many variations of the dolls, some of which are very original and expressive.
Another attraction of the island can be called
Larimar a semiprecious stone blue, which is also called the Dominican turquoise. This stone was discovered in the 70s, and now it can be
found only in the Dominican Republic. Masters made out of it a lot of products,
such as rings, necklaces and bracelets, charms and other jewelry, set in a
variety of metals, including gold and silver.
